Two US hospital facilities win LEED Gold

Published: 08-Apr-2011

Jordan Valley Community Health Center in Springfield, and Hillsboro Area Hospital and Hillsboro Area Health System in Illinois, US have been awarded LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council.

St. Louis-based Vertegy was the LEED consultant for both the projects with Alberici Constructors serving as the general contractor.

Jordan Valley Community Health Center is a federally qualified health center that provides primary medical, dental and behavioural health services in Southwest Missouri. Designed by Lawrence Group, the facility underwent renovation to transform the existing facility for accommodating the health center’s needs.

The facility incorporated a host of sustainability measures to achieve the honour. Spanning 72,000-square-foot, the building employed eco-friendly interior finishes such as super glass to create an energy-efficient design, clerestory windows and expansive day lighting. About 92% of the existing structure was reused in the renovation, with more than 60% of the construction and demolition waste diverted from the landfill through recycling centers and reuse.

Some additional sustainable elements include white membrane roofing material to decrease the heat island effects to the surrounding area; water-efficient flush/flow fixtures such as dual-flush water closets, low-flow urinals and low-flow lavatory and kitchen faucets; vegetation and pervious paving blocks which replaced the existing impervious pavement; and use of whole-building simulation for energy modeling to help provide information about the energy efficiency of the building and guide the design process, resulting in an estimated energy savings of more than 28%. The facility also incorporated signage detailing the sustainable features, and a green cleaning management program for addressing cleaning products and procedures.

Spanning 22,700-square-foot, the new addition to the Hillsboro Area Hospital and Health System was designed by architecture firm Space. It houses emergency room areas, CT and X-Ray rooms, ultrasound and mammography spaces, general exam rooms, and educational spaces. It was built in conjunction with Lincoln Land Community College.

It also incorporated several sustainable elements to achieve LEED Gold including a white membrane roof and a portion of high albedo paving surfaces to decrease the heat island effects; dual flush toilets using only 0.5 gallons per flush urinals and low-flow lavatory and kitchen faucets; landscaping that requires no permanent irrigation; and preferred parking for carpoolers and low-emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles.

Whole-building simulation was employed in this facility too. The space features vegetated, open areas for over 50% of the site. Refrigerants were chosen with regard to ozone-depleting and global-warming potentials. Recycled and regionally-sourced materials were employed with diversion of more than 75% of the construction and demolition waste from the landfill. The ventilation system has been designed to incorporate an outdoor air delivery monitoring system. A strict no or low-emitting VOC policy and Construction Indoor Air Quality Management program was also followed during construction.
