shl architects wins Kolding Hospital design contest in Denmark
Published: 30-Sep-2010
Danish practice schmidt hammer lassen (shl) architects has won the competition to design the new masterplan and extension of Kolding Hospital in Denmark.
The building extension spanning 32,000 square metres will contain a bed ward, an emergency ward and a new main entrance. shl has designed these components in association with NIRAS, CREO, Balslev and GBL. Kim Holst Jensen, partner at schmidt hammer lassen architects, stated that the firm’s ambition was to create a complete hospital masterplan with a brand new identity.
The main entrance of the hospital has been relocated to the west of the existing hospital, based on a careful analysis of the surrounding landscape, the existing buildings and the infrastructural conditions. This entrance relocation offers a new identity to the hospital, with the main entrance becoming visible and clear. These changes have maintained and reinforced the internal flow of the hospital, and the entire hospital will be perceived as a complete structure where buildings and nearby surroundings complement each other.
Kasper Frandsen, associate partner at shl said that the masterplan emphasises the potential of the landscape of Kolding River Valley by continuing the orthogonal building structure while allowing the nature and greenery to penetrate the buildings. By placing the new bed ward on top of the existing building, full advantage of the beautiful view of the surrounding forest has been taken along with outlining the future developments of the hospital.
Though Kolding Hospital is the first hospital project for schmidt hammer lassen architects, the practice is pursuing other possibilities in the field. Currently, the practice is finishing another hospital competition with a proposal for the new Herlev Hospital.
The extension of Kolding Hospital has a construction sum of approximately €77 million ($104 million) and is expected to be completed in 2014.
