North London Hospice scoops two design awards
North London Hospice, a provider of specialist care to terminally ill people, has won two design awards for its day services building in Barrowell Green, Winchmore Hill.
The building was presented with the highest level of award as an ‘outstanding example of architecture and environmental design’ by Civic Trust Awards.
In addition, the building also won the ‘Special Award for Sustainability’, for demonstrating ‘excellent sustainability credentials in terms of overall design parameters, material selection, construction methods and long-term energy consumption.’
The hospice building was recognised by Civic Trust Awards from 263 national and international entries. Judges felt the new-build facility that offers patients and their carers a range of care and support services was very well constructed with careful and thorough detailing throughout. In addition, the judges thought the rooms felt individual and special with the generous windows offering views to the landscape, providing a sense of wellbeing and calm and adding a special dimension to the hospice.
The hospice includes treatment rooms, a day room and a cafe, and can cater to 500 patients. There are 17 single rooms, each with their own toilet and shower. There is also a television with freeview/DVD player and a small fridge. Some rooms have patio doors which open onto a terrace. All patients have access to a peaceful courtyard with fishpond.
North London Hospice helps people to live with a potentially life-limiting illness providing emotional, spiritual and practical support to them, their families, friends and carers. The Hospice is a registered charity and receives a small proportion of funding from the NHS.
The Civic Trust Awards has recognised 86 projects from 263 national and international entries.
