Children’s at Hughes Spalding becomes Georgia’s first LEED-Gold hospital

Published: 08-Dec-2010

Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Hughes Spalding in Georgia designed by HKS Architects has received LEED-Gold certification, becoming the first hospital in Georgia to achieve this ‘green’ honour.

Under the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Healthcare Green Building Rating System, the paediatric facility has been recognised as an excellent sustainable building designed for better environmental and health performance. Children’s at Hughes Spalding received considerably high marks in the Sustainable Sites, Indoor Environment and Innovation categories.

Designed by HKS Architects in association with Turner/Duckett, the 71,000 square feet not-for profit paediatrics hospital is a newly built hospital, which includes renovation of a 7,000 square feet office facility. The architectural team considered all aspects of the design and use of materials from the inception of the project, with the objective of achieving LEED Gold certification.

Rainwater collection for site irrigation; recycled materials from the demolished five-storey structure built in 1952; high solar reflectance index surfaces for the roof and hard-scape to reduce heat island effect; occupancy sensors to save energy; and use of natural light are some of the key environmentally-conscious elements incorporated into the facility. HKS has designed the healthcare facility to be pedestrian-friendly with bicycle racks and ease of access to public transportation.

The $43 million facility houses specialty clinics, primary care services and an enhanced emergency department.

Designated specifically for green building, Children’s at Hughes Spalding received a transformational gift from the Kendeda Fund. The hospital was also declared as the winner of the Atlanta Downtown Design Excellence Award in the community category.
